My pastor recently told a story about an insightful young boy he had encountered at an Easter egg hunt. This young boy named Michael eagerly shared his enthusiasm for his haul.
“Look, Mr. Mark,” the young boy exclaimed as he held up his basket. “Ain’t them eggs somethin’”?
“They sure are,” agreed Mr. Mark as he examined the basket full of opened and empty plastic eggs.
“What are you going to do with all those shells now that the prizes inside are gone”?
“I’m gonna keep ‘em on the shelf in my room and look at ‘em all year long,” assured the boy.
“Why do you want to keep the eggs now? They’re all empty,” insisted Mr. Mark.
“It don’t matter that they’re empty. In fact, they ain’t s’pose to have anything inside. Just like Jesus’s tomb was empty, these eggs’ll remind me that it’s Easter all year long”!
Michael then skipped away with his basket full of empty eggs, and Mr. Mark was left to chew upon what had just happened.
“That kid may be making a ‘D’ in grammar,” thought Mr. Mark, “but he should get an ‘A+’ in theology.”
Matthew 28:5-6 tells us, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.”
Later, Matthew tells us in verse 20 that Jesus says, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
The eggs are empty. The tomb is empty. Christ is not there. He is here.
Even today in this crazy, mixed-up world, He is with us.
In the words of C. S. Lewis, “The central Christian belief is that Christ’s death has put us right with God and given us a fresh start.”
Let’s be new every morning. Let’s be willing to see Easter all year long!
